A Voice Silenced by Tradition

Woman Finger to Lips Shh

Anonymous Kaur writes about the disconnect she sees in our community – the disconnect between what we practice and what we read in gurbani. “Every Sunday we listen to Asa Di Vaar and nod our heads in agreement to the sentiments expressed,” she said “…and then we go home to do the exact opposite in how we treat the women in our communities. I hope that I can shed light on our own hypocrisies and encourage people to look within.”

My daughter

Dear daughter

you are a treasure in my house

you are my honor,

inheritance to the whole village,

it is our duty to protect you

we proclaim that with loud voices

our Gurus gave you a higher value

we are proud of this fact

but please note

we will crush your soul within the sanctuary of your home

we will drown your voice in the name of traditions

we will quieten your voice

but uphold your honor in every folk lore

people remember Waris Shah’s Heer

they forget that she too died for her love
