And You’re Standing Here Beside Me

by Jagdeep Raina

The oil painting below was inspired by an old archival photo I found from a family album early on this year. The painting is all about a mother’s love, a colored mother’s love in a predominantly white setting of a White Canadian Town in the early 90s proudly adorning her panjabi/kashmiri suit. it was inspired from a simple archival photo from the early 90s, and I wanted to capture that feeling of nostalgia/longing and almost a melancholia that I seek to instill in my work. I wanted to distort the painting and allow the colors and the mood to linger throughout it, with emphasis not just on the woman and her baby, but of the trees, the houses/cars, truly capturing a scene of timeless love, a mother’s love, being evoked amongst a mundane suburbia.
