One mother’s struggle between the Sikh spirit of gender equality and the Punjabi culture of gender inequality:

The following work was inspired by the dichotomy of emotions seen in a mother’s eyes when she gives birth to a daughter, uncertain of whether she should rejoice over her daughter’s life and prospects or fear society’s inequalities and injustices.
ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਨਹਿਰੇ ਹੰਝੂ ਡੁੱਲ੍ਹੇ, [Meriyan akkhan de sunehre hanju duleh,
ਜਦ ਸੁਣੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਅਵਾਜ਼। Jadh suni teri pehli avaaz.
ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ, Teriyan akkhan vich vekhdiyan,
ਮੇਰਾ ਦਿਲ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਤੇ ਗ਼ਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੰਿਬਆ। Mera dil khushi te gamh vich kambiya.]
Golden tears flowed,
When I heard you for the first time.
As I looked into your eyes,
My heart trembled with joy and sorrow.
ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਉਡੀਕ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਦੀ, [Khushi meri udheek de anth di,
ਪਰ ਗ਼ਮ ਤੇਰੇ ਬੋਝ ਕਹਿਲਾਉਣ ਦਾ। Par gamh tere bohj kehlan da.
ਭਾਵੇਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਸਦੀ ਤੂੰ, Paave mere dil vich vasdi tu,
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ ਦਿਲ ਪੱਥਰ। Duniya da dil pathar.]
Joy for your arrival,
But sorrow that you would be called a burden.
Although you reside in my heart,
Hearts out there are cold.
ਵੇ ਬੇਬੇ, ਵੇਖ ਿੲਹਦੀ ਮੁਸਕਾਨ, [Ve bebe, vekh ehdi muskaan,
ਤੇਰੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਿੲਤਬਾਰੀ ਹੈ। Tere vaang itbaari hai.
ਵੇ ਬਾਪੂ, ਵੇਖ ਿੲਹਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ, Ve bapu, vekh ehdian akkhan.
ਤੇਰੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਕੲੀ ਉਮੀਦਾਂ ਭਰੀਆਂ ਹਨ। Tere vaang kaiye umeedan pariyan han.]
Oh mother, look at her smile.
Like you, it is trustworthy.
Oh father, look into her eyes.
Like you, they have many hopes.
ਧੀਏ, ਵੇਖ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੁਸਕਾਨ। [Dheeay, vekh meri muskaan.
ਸਹਿਮੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਆਵੇਗੀ। Sehmi khushi nazar aavegi.
ਧੀਏ, ਵੇਖ ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ। Dheeay, vekh meriyan akkhan.
ਤੇਰੇ ਲੲੀ ਕੲੀ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਸੱਜੇ ਹਨ। Tere laiye kaiye supne sajje han.]
Daughter, look at my smile,
And bear witness to timid happiness.
Daughter, look into my eyes,
Already filled with dreams for you.
